What makes this the best gluten-free apple crumble recipe
My mother used to make the most amazing apple crumble growing up, and it was always a nice little treat every time she would make it. However, the recipe my mother used to make was not a vegan nor gluten-free since it would use butter and flour. So, with a few little changes, I’ve adapted it to be vegan and gluten-friendly if you do not have sensitivities to oats. However if you do have sensitivities to oats, I would suggest you try the version without oats here.
Is Apple Crisp Gluten-Free?
Typically made with oats, however apple crisp is usually not gluten-free. There is usually about a cup of flour in the recipe. This is why i made this one with a mix of almond meal and gluten-free flour. Also as a thickener for the filling I used arrowroot starch or corn starch.
Making Gluten-Free Apple Crisp with Oats
Depending on how sensitive you are to gluten, whether you are gluten intolerant or celiac, you might want to make sure that the oats that you are using are indeed gluten-free. Surprisingly, I learned that most oats are processed in facilities that also process regular flour, and therefor contaminating the oats. Just watch for the gluten-free symbol on the packaging when shopping for oats. Also I personally enjoy the texture of the rolled oats more than the instant oats in this recipe, so just watch for this subtlety. The rolled oats are a lot thicker than the instant oats.
Making your Apple Crumble Dairy-Free
There is not much dairy in the original recipe. However, there is a lot of butter. There are lots of vegan alternatives available at most grocery stores that work quite well in this recipe. I prefer the salted versions for a little sweet and salty taste.
What apples make the best gluten-free apple crumble?
When baking apples, it is important that they keep their consistency. Nothing worst than having apples that turn mushy. I prefer using Honey Crisp apples that have a great balance between tart and sweet which works so well with the oat crumble topping.
How to make this gluten-free apple crumble
Preparation
It is an easy recipe to make, but it does require a little bit of elbow kitchen grease to peel and slice the apples. Core your apples and slice them into 1/4 inch slices then put them in your baking dish. In order to keep them from browning, juice one lemon and combine with a 1/4 cup of water and mix with the apples. Once you finish all this, start preheating your oven at 350F.

Making the apple filling
Mix all the apple filling ingredients in a small bowl, then combine with the apples till uniform.

Making your Gluten-Free apple crisp topping
In a separate bowl, mix all your topping ingredients till you have a chunky yet uniform. Although it is a little messier, I like to do this part with my hands just so that everything is well mixed in. Simply pour the contents on top of your apple filling.

Baking your apple crumble
Bake for 40 minutes in a convection oven or 50 minutes in a regular oven or until the apples are tender and juices from the apples have seeped throughout the filling. Cool for 15 minutes and serve with some vanilla ice cream!
Storing your Gluten-Free apple Crumble
Just pop it in the fridge with a little plastic wrap, and you can keep it as long as a week. Alternatively, you can also portion size it into ziplock bags and store it in the freezer for up to 3 months.
Vegan Apple Crisp Recipe Replacements and Alternatives
Can you make this apple crisp without oats gluten free?

Can you make this into a rhubarb crisp (gluten-free)?
If you are anywhere as obsessed with rhubarb as I am, then you’ll love the rhubarb crisp gluten-free version. Replace the apples with 6 cups of rhubarb cut into 1 1/2 inch thick pieces all follow all of the same steps. The spices for the apples work also quite well for the rhubarb. As simple as that you have a rhubarb crisp gluten-free recipe.
