Whether she be a mom, step-mom, grand-mother or some other woman of influence in your life, she deserves a thanks. These Mother’s Day Brunch ideas might not make the parenting job any easier, but they sure do make you feel like the work that you do matters. These little moments of appreciation are important for their sanity.

Being in the role of a step-mom often puts me in a difficult position, especially when the biological mother is so highly involved. A lot of the times, it makes it that there is a loss of control out in my own household and relationship. I came into my parenting role overnight, not really knowing what to expect.

Obviously, this day is to recognize all the sacrifices that a mother makes in raising her children but unfortunately, there is no Step-Mother’s Day. Not to take anything away from the biological parents sacrifices but a lot of the times the step-parents sacrifices often get forgotten. Every step-parent’s experiences are different; some more manageable than others, but they all come with their own unique set of challenges to overcome they often get overlooked, leaving the step-parents feeling lonely and that their lives are getting over-run and managed by the biological parents.

I would like to dedicate this post to all those step-moms that have to sacrifice the centre stage and have taken a back seat for the sakes of children that are not their own. It is, by far, the most challenging role I have ever had to take on, especially not having children of my own. Most of us will try our best to balance out our own needs with the needs of the kids which always seem to come into conflict with one another. Sometimes it might seem that step-parents are being selfish, needy or complain too much but keep in mind that their sacrifices often go unnoticed their neediness is them needing a little something back too and the biological parents will often get looked at them as being “normal” things to do.

I have been lucky enough that for Mother’s Day, my step-daughter has always made me little gifts so that I’m not being left out. Also, my partner has been god sent doing his best in trying to understand my position and that is all that I can ask for. Patience. Obviously, these little gifts aren’t going to make the step-parenting situation any less difficult, but it is these little moments that make it all worth it.

So for Mother’s Day, it might not seem like it, but she has also sacrificed a lot too. She has had to step in and take on a motherly role without having any power as to how her step children are raised. She has had to give up being in the spotlight of her relationship for the sakes of her step-children. They get to do homework, activity planning & organizing, cooking, cleaning, comforting when sad, entertaining when bored, driving to various activities, keeping them happy and satisfied, and above all else loving them like their your own. So the next time a step-parent is seemly acting annoyed, frustrated or angry, be easy on them, it is a huge learning process and an immensely challenging role to take on.

Gluten-free, vegan, & dairy free Nutella Chocolate-Hazelnut Spread

Growing up, Nutella was always one of those go-tos that I would love to have for breakfast. Sadly being gluten-free and dairy free, I can’t enjoy these kind of simple pleasures anymore. However, having found built this vegan Nutella recipe has made it that I can enjoy this again and if your mother is also in the same boat and has a bit of a sweet tooth, she will definitely enjoy this. What’s great about this is that after making the Nutella, you’ll have lots left over for other breakfasts that will be the gift that keeps on giving. The best part is that it doesn’t have all of the preservatives that the original version has. With only 4 ingredients, it is so simple to make.
